Chairman McMahon urges Lincoln voters to attend Financial Town Meeting

Ask one hundred families why they move to a particular community and you'll get many answers. But, if you take the time to probe their answers – to really listen to what they have to say – you'll hear families tell you time and again, “It's the school system that brought us here.”

This has been a painful year for all of us and the economy is affecting us in ways we may never have imagined in years past. A much-needed sense of fiscal conservatism has settled over our nation and the small town of Lincoln is no different from other towns in Rhode Island or across this country. It's time we begin to live within our means and make difficult decisions regarding the finite resources we have available to us individually and collectively.

A school system – wherever you live – is a massive undertaking requiring large portions of the municipal budget and dedication from faculty, staff and town residents. None of this will have changed when we wake up on the morning after our financial town meeting. What is different this year though is that now we are scared. The economy is bad, many of us have lost jobs and we are over our heads in debt. In times like these, people are especially susceptible to fear-mongering. We've all heard the chatter telling us there are underhanded tactics being played out that will drastically increase our tax burden to feed the greedy school system. In difficult economic times this kind of scary talk can be especially devastating to the schools, the dedicated people who make the system work and most importantly – to our children.

There is a cure for this though: It's called an open mind and reasoned debate. On May 11 th , every eligible voter in Lincoln will have the opportunity to attend our annual Financial Town Meeting. This is one of the more important nights of the year – it's the night you decide how our collective money will be spent. Don't let the scary talk spook you. Come to the meeting. Listen to the arguments for and against each item in the budget. Then, make a rational decision you will be proud of. Vote your mind and be proud of your participation. You are the only one who can make a difference.

See you at the meeting.
